National Women's History Month is an honorary observance every March in the United States, which was established by the United States Congress in 1987, in honor of women's tremendous achievements throughout history.

National Women’s History Month is celebrated annually starting on the first of March until the very last day of the month.

  • When did National Women’s History Month originate?

Women’s History Month can be traced back to 1981 when Congress successfully passed Pub. L. 97-28, authorizing and requesting President Jimmy Carter to proclaim March 7, 1982, as Women’s History Week. During the next five years, Congress continued to pass resolutions that designate a week in March as Women’s History Week. 

In 1987, the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress to pass the Pub. L. 100-9, which designates the whole month of March solely for Women’s History Month. Since 1995, US Presidents have declared March to be "Women's History Month" in a succession of annual proclamations.
